"Sandpile" Cellular Automaton on a Grid of Triangles

Each image is a still from an animation of the growth of a cellular automaton. The images are in chronological order, but are not successive iterations. Most cellular automata use grids of square cells, but I like to experiment with other types of grid, too. Here, each cell is an equilateral triangle.

The cells are colour-coded according to the numerical values contained in them: Red = 0, Black = 1, Yellow = 2.
The automaton reaches a stable, unchanging end-state when all cells have a numerical value less than 3.
